Emergency Plans: A Legal Requirement The installation of emergency plans is mandatory by law in Portugal, as defined by the Legal Regime for Fire Safety in Buildings (RJ-SCIE – Decree-Law No. 220/2008 and Ordinance No. 1532/2008). These regulations stipulate that all public or collective use buildings must have adequate emergency lighting and illuminated signage to ensure: Minimum illumination of escape routes Signalling of emergency exits Automatic operation in case of power failure➡️ In other words, without properly installed emergency plans, the building does not comply with the law and will not obtain approval from the competent authorities. In Which Spaces Are They Mandatory?
